What an Apple gift card pays for
Apple merged its old iTunes and App Store cards into a single Apple Gift Card. The balance sits on your Apple ID and covers:
- Apps and games from the App Store
- In-app purchases, including game currency
- iCloud+ storage, which is the most common use in Kenya once a phone fills up
- Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade
- Subscriptions billed through the App Store
- Books and films
One important limit: the balance pays for subscriptions billed through Apple. A subscription you signed up for directly on a company's own website is billed by that company, not Apple, so your Apple balance cannot pay it.
The region rule
This decides everything, so handle it first.
An Apple gift card only works on an Apple ID from the same country. A US card tops up a US Apple ID. A UK card tops up a UK Apple ID. There is no conversion and no workaround. If the countries do not match, Apple rejects the code and you are left holding credit you cannot spend.
Check your Apple ID country in ten seconds

- Tap your name at the very top
- Tap Media & Purchases, then View Account
- Tap Country/Region
Whatever it says there is the card you must buy. On a Mac, the same information sits in the App Store under your account settings.
In our experience most Kenyan users are on a United States Apple ID, because that is the region people choose to get the widest app selection. But do not assume — check. Some accounts created through a Kenyan carrier or an older Apple ID sit on a different region entirely.
Can you change your Apple ID country instead?
Sometimes, but it is rarely worth it. Apple requires your existing balance to be spent to zero first, cancels subscriptions tied to the old region, and may ask for a payment method registered in the new country. Buying the matching card is faster and cheaper than migrating an account.

- Tap Enter Code Manually and type it in
On a Mac
- Open the App Store

- Click Redeem Gift Card
In a browser
Go to apple.co/redeem, sign in with the Apple ID you want topped up, and enter the code.
Whichever route you take, sign in with the correct account first. A code redeemed onto the wrong Apple ID cannot be moved.
When redemption fails
